Jacinta Stevens, founder and creative director of JAST Mode, is challenging stereotypes in Ghana’s predominantly male-oriented fashion space through her work in luxury menswear.
Stevens, a graduate of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with a degree in Social Work, has built a career that combines fashion, entrepreneurship and social impact.
Through JAST Mode, she offers bespoke and ready-to-wear men’s clothing alongside personalised styling services, with a focus on combining classic elegance with contemporary fashion.
Stevens said her interest in men’s sartorial fashion was driven by a gap she identified in the market for modern tailored clothing that balances timeless sophistication with contemporary style.
The brand also incorporates African patterns, textiles and motifs into modern silhouettes, creating designs that celebrate African identity while appealing to the modern, fashion-conscious man.
According to Stevens, one of her key objectives is to preserve African heritage through fashion by presenting traditional elements in innovative and contemporary ways.
Breaking barriers in menswear
As a female designer operating in a space traditionally associated with male designers, Stevens has encountered doubts and stereotypes about her ability to understand and design for men.
Rather than allowing these perceptions to discourage her, she said the challenges have strengthened her resolve and motivated her to use her unique perspective to develop distinctive designs.
Her journey demonstrates how women can create opportunities and establish themselves in areas where they may traditionally be underrepresented.
Beyond fashion, Stevens is also the founder of the Jacinta Stevens Foundation, which focuses on providing resources and support to orphans and underprivileged communities.
She also founded JSTEVENS Protocol Service, a company that provides professional event coordination and protocol services.
Her various ventures reflect an entrepreneurial approach that combines creativity with a broader commitment to community development.
Advice to emerging fashion designers
Stevens has encouraged aspiring designers to focus on mastering their craft while remaining authentic to their creative identity.
She also urged designers to understand the cultural significance of African designs and incorporate them thoughtfully into their work.
For her, quality remains essential to building a sustainable fashion brand, while digital platforms provide an important avenue for designers to showcase their work and connect with wider audiences.
Through JAST Mode, Stevens continues to position African-inspired luxury menswear as a space where heritage, contemporary design and individuality can coexist.
