<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ghanaian fashion designer Eugene d’Wise, born Samuel Eugene Asare Okai, is carving a distinctive path in the fashion industry by combining Ghanaian heritage with contemporary haute couture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a creative philosophy rooted in culture, identity and storytelling, Eugene d’Wise has built a reputation for creating designs that celebrate African aesthetics while maintaining a modern and sophisticated appeal.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His journey into fashion was shaped by both education and family heritage. While studying Marketing at Accra Technical University, Eugene developed skills in branding and communication that would later influence the growth of his fashion career.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, fashion had always been close to him. His mother was a skilled seamstress, while his grandfather was a traditional designer and tailor in the Eastern Region. Growing up around sewing machines, fabrics and tailoring, Eugene was exposed to the craft from an early age.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I come from a family of designers,” he says, describing his approach as an evolution of the legacy passed down to him.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Building a distinctive fashion identity</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eugene d’Wise has developed a signature style characterised by structured tailoring, luxurious detailing and a bold African aesthetic.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Between 2019 and 2025, he contributed to campaigns and creative projects involving major African textile brands including GTP, Vlisco and Woodin.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His work has extended beyond designing garments to include styling, creative direction, customer experience and fashion mentorship.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2024, he played a key role in GTP’s “Discover Your Style” retail event in Osu, where he helped customers explore fabric combinations and understand the possibilities of contemporary Ghanaian ready-to-wear fashion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His collaboration with Vlisco in 2021 also produced the “de LUXE” collection, combining timeless silhouettes with vibrant African wax prints. He also worked with Woodin on seasonal collections that reflected the contemporary African urban lifestyle.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Taking Ghanaian fashion to wider audiences</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eugene d’Wise has showcased his designs on both local and international platforms, further strengthening his presence within Africa’s fashion ecosystem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He featured at the Fashion Connect Africa “Year of Return” showcase in 2019, an event that celebrated African creativity and connections with the diaspora.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2021, he also participated in the Wear Ghana Fashion Festival, presenting Ghanaian culture through fashion in a virtual showcase filmed at notable locations across Accra.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His portfolio includes appearances at Fashion Finest Africa and the Ambassadors’ Spouses of Ghana gala, highlighting the broad appeal of his designs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From fashion runways to pageantry and film</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond fashion showcases, Eugene d’Wise has become a notable creative presence in Ghanaian beauty pageantry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He has designed for major competitions and platforms including Miss Malaika Ghana, Miss Universe Ghana, Miss Supranational, Miss Ghana and Ghana’s Most Beautiful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His ability to combine glamour with African cultural elements has helped establish him as a designer capable of creating distinctive looks for high-profile occasions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His creative versatility also extends into film. In 2021, he served as lead stylist for <em>A Happy Surprise</em>, a production by Ghanaian actress and filmmaker Martha Ankomah.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The project allowed him to apply his fashion expertise to costume and styling, demonstrating his ability to work beyond traditional couture.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fashion as a tool for cultural storytelling</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Eugene d’Wise, fashion represents more than clothing. His creative work is centred on preserving culture and communicating identity through design.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Every fabric choice, every stitch, is a way of preserving identity and projecting it to the world,” he explains.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That philosophy has earned him industry recognition. In 2021, he was named <strong>Ghanaian Fashion Designer of the Year</strong> at the Ghana Arts and Culture Awards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As he continues to develop his brand, Eugene d’Wise is positioning fashion as a bridge between Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and contemporary global style, using design to tell African stories while creating pieces suited for modern audiences.</p>
