Elizabeth Amoaa, popularly known as Speciallady, has shared how years of health challenges and difficult life experiences inspired her to become an advocate for women’s reproductive health.

Amoaa, the Founder of Speciallady Awareness, Author of The Unspoken Identity – The Woman with Two Vaginas and current President of Rotary Global Hub, was born in Ghana and raised in France and the United Kingdom.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from London Metropolitan University and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Surrey. Her initial ambition was to become an international lawyer, but her prolonged health struggles significantly altered her career path.

According to Amoaa, she experienced recurrent vaginal infections, fatigue, chronic pain and heavy, painful and irregular menstrual periods for years.

In 2008, she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids and infertility. She later became pregnant during her master’s degree programme and gave birth prematurely to her daughter shortly after completing her LLM.

Five years after her daughter’s birth, Amoaa was diagnosed with two wombs, two cervixes and two vaginal canals, alongside severe endometriosis, adhesions and secondary infertility.

The experience, she said, motivated her to become a voice for women and girls living with reproductive health conditions, particularly those who may be suffering in silence.

In 2017, following a missed miscarriage during which she carried a dead foetus for several weeks, Amoaa established Speciallady Awareness to raise awareness of gynaecological conditions, promote menstrual hygiene and help combat menstrual poverty.

Through the organisation, she has supported communities, hospitals and schools in Ghana with sanitary products and medical supplies worth thousands of pounds.

Speciallady Awareness also organises outreach programmes, seminars and workshops focused on reproductive health and menstrual hygiene, while providing consultations, life coaching and mentoring for young people.

Amoaa has also documented her experiences in her book, The Unspoken Identity – The Woman with Two Vaginas, published in November 2020. The book is available through several libraries and online retailers globally.

Reflecting on her journey, Amoaa encouraged people facing difficult circumstances to remain resilient, seek professional support and use their experiences as opportunities for positive transformation.

“Every challenge you face in life serves as an opportunity to transform your life positively,” she said.

For Amoaa, the health challenges that disrupted her original ambitions have instead become the foundation of a wider mission to educate, inspire and advocate for women and girls.
