The entrepreneurial journey of Michael L. Bartlett-Vanderpuye, Group Chairman of M&C Group, has been highlighted in the latest edition of My Story Magazine, which examines his rise from modest beginnings to building a business group with long-term ambitions.

Featured as the cover personality of the magazine’s 24th issue, Bartlett-Vanderpuye shares insights into the experiences, principles and challenges that have shaped his approach to entrepreneurship and leadership.

His journey began on a relatively small scale, at a time when he operated his business from a room with limited resources.

Rather than waiting for ideal conditions or a fully developed corporate structure, he focused on establishing the foundation of the business and gradually expanding as opportunities emerged.

That experience would later influence one of his core business principles: entrepreneurs should prioritise building a solid enterprise before concentrating on appearances or corporate image.

Before fully pursuing entrepreneurship, Bartlett-Vanderpuye accumulated experience across several professional fields. His background includes banking, accounting, marketing, packaging and logistics, while his involvement in mining advisory services and property further exposed him to different sectors of the economy.

He believes the combination of these experiences helped him understand how different industries operate and how opportunities can emerge at the intersection of various sectors.

          Overcoming uncertainty

The development of his business was not without setbacks.

Bartlett-Vanderpuye recounts a period when he repeatedly submitted proposals without any guarantee that they would result in business opportunities. Even after moving into an office in East Legon, he encountered people who assumed he was an employee rather than the owner of the business.

For him, such experiences became part of the learning process associated with entrepreneurship.

The journey reinforced the importance of persistence, particularly when early efforts do not immediately produce the desired results.

His experience has also shaped his belief that entrepreneurs should avoid creating an appearance of success without first establishing the systems and operations necessary to support it.

          Beyond owning a business

Bartlett-Vanderpuye’s definition of entrepreneurship extends beyond simply owning a company.

He advocates an approach in which professionals deliberately create value through investments, relationships, assets and additional opportunities while developing their careers.

He also places emphasis on networks and partnerships, arguing that businesses can achieve more when they identify opportunities for collaboration instead of viewing every company in the same sector as a rival.

According to his philosophy, strategic relationships can help businesses combine expertise, resources and opportunities to generate greater value.

Research as a foundation for expansion

International exposure has also contributed to Bartlett-Vanderpuye’s approach to business development.

He believes entrepreneurs must conduct adequate research and understand the markets they seek to enter rather than simply replicate business models that have worked in other countries or industries.

Factors such as regulations, market structures, relationships and operational requirements, he argues, can determine whether a business model succeeds in a particular environment.

This emphasis on research and understanding forms part of his broader approach to sustainable expansion.

          A vision beyond personal wealth

As his business interests have expanded, Bartlett-Vanderpuye has increasingly focused on building an enterprise that can have an impact beyond its founder.

Through M&C Group, he sees opportunities to contribute to employment creation, skills development, partnerships and broader economic activity.

He believes the private sector has an important responsibility in helping address unemployment by creating sustainable businesses and opportunities for people to develop their skills.

In this regard, he views a successful company as one that creates value for employees, suppliers, partners and the wider economy, rather than benefiting only its owner.

          Building for future generations

Legacy is another important element of Bartlett-Vanderpuye’s vision.

He wants the businesses he builds to remain viable and productive even when he is no longer directly involved in their daily operations.

His objective is therefore to establish systems and structures that can continue to create value for his children and generations that follow.

This long-term outlook has influenced his view of success, with emphasis placed on sustainability rather than short-term recognition.

Bartlett-Vanderpuye is also cautious about judging businesses by their visibility, particularly in an era where social media can create perceptions of success that may not necessarily reflect the underlying strength of a company.

For him, genuine business performance should ultimately be measured by factors such as customers, systems, assets, operations and results.

From a room to the boardroom

The transformation from operating with limited resources to becoming chairman of a growing business group is central to Bartlett-Vanderpuye’s story.

His experience demonstrates a progression built around learning, persistence and gradual expansion rather than immediate corporate prominence.

The profile in My Story Magazine presents his journey as an example of how entrepreneurs can start with limited resources while maintaining ambitions that extend far beyond their initial circumstances.

Bartlett-Vanderpuye’s story also reflects his belief that successful entrepreneurship requires discipline, careful decision-making and the ability to build before seeking recognition.

The 24th issue of My Story Magazine features him on its cover and explores his experiences in entrepreneurship, leadership, business development and his vision of creating an enterprise capable of lasting beyond his generation.
