Ghanaian blogger Augustus Koranteng Kyei, popularly known as Kobby Kyei, has built a distinctive reputation in the country’s digital media space by using blogging as a platform for social impact, advocacy and meaningful storytelling.

Unlike the traditional approach of focusing largely on entertainment and celebrity news, Kobby Kyei has deliberately carved a niche around educative, informative and socially conscious content.

His journey into blogging has been marked by a transition from formal employment to digital entrepreneurship, a decision that has ultimately positioned him among Ghana’s influential bloggers.

Born and raised in Agona Duakwa in the Central Region, Kobby Kyei developed an interest in education and music before venturing into the world of blogging.

He attended Greenfield Preparatory School in Agona Swedru before proceeding to Nyankumasi Ahenkro Senior High School, where he studied General Arts.

He later pursued Music Education at the University of Education, Winneba, earning both a diploma and degree in the field. His training also made him a professional trumpeter and music teacher.

After completing his studies, Kobby Kyei was posted to Ashaiman Senior High School as a music teacher. However, in 2017, he made the bold decision to leave teaching and pursue blogging full-time.

The decision initially did not receive strong support from his parents, who preferred the stability associated with formal employment. Kobby, however, remained determined and promised to return to teaching if blogging failed to work within two years.

His growing success soon proved that the decision could become a viable career. By 2018, he had purchased his first car with income generated from blogging, marking an important milestone in his journey.

Building a different kind of blogging brand

Kobby Kyei was inspired by established Ghanaian blogger Ameyaw Debrah and his admiration for music star Sarkodie also influenced his early interest in entertainment content.

However, he eventually recognized an opportunity to use digital media for something broader than entertainment.

He began focusing on human-interest stories, educational content and issues affecting communities. This approach has helped him distinguish his brand while creating opportunities for corporate partnerships, advocacy and youth engagement.

For Kobby Kyei, blogging has become more than a profession. It has evolved into a platform through which he can highlight social issues and encourage conversations around matters affecting society.

Turning digital influence into social impact

One of the major aspects of Kobby Kyei’s work has been his commitment to philanthropy and community development.

Through his Go There with Kobby Kyei Foundation, he has supported people living with disabilities, including donating more than 20 wheelchairs to people in remote communities.

He has also championed the Respect Zebra Crossing campaign, a road safety initiative aimed at promoting pedestrian safety.

The campaign, undertaken in collaboration with the Norwegian Ambassador, contributed to efforts to establish pedestrian crossings in communities including Sowutuom.

These initiatives demonstrate Kobby Kyei’s broader philosophy that digital influence should be connected to real-world impact.

Taking Ghanaian blogging to global platforms

His work has earned him several recognitions, including Youth Blogger of the Year at the Youth Excellence Awards Africa in 2021 and 2022.

He has also received recognition from GhanaWeb and was honoured at the National Communications Awards.

In 2024, Kobby Kyei was invited to address the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where he spoke about the role of media and blogging in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

His contribution focused on issues including human trafficking and social justice, giving him an opportunity to represent the potential of digital media on an international platform.

          Continuing the advocacy

Kobby Kyei’s current advocacy efforts include the Boys Lives Matter Too campaign, which focuses on male mental health, vulnerability and empowerment.

He is also seeking to expand the Respect Zebra Crossing project to additional communities while advocating for stronger ethical standards within Ghana’s digital media ecosystem.

Another area of interest is digital literacy. Kobby has advocated for social media and content creation literacy to be incorporated into school curricula to help young people better understand the opportunities and responsibilities that come with digital platforms.

His journey from a trained music teacher to an influential blogger illustrates how digital media can create new career paths while providing opportunities for social engagement.

For Kobby Kyei, the future of blogging lies not only in attracting attention but also in creating value.

His story continues to reinforce the idea that blogging can go beyond entertainment to educate audiences, amplify important voices and contribute to positive change in society.
