Clara Naa Koshie Lamptey, founder of Hair Spice, has highlighted quality, authenticity and customer trust as key factors behind the growth of her beauty business in Ghana.
Lamptey’s entrepreneurial journey has involved several ventures, experiences she says have equipped her with practical knowledge in customer service, pricing, branding and business resilience.
Growing up in a family with strong entrepreneurial influences, she was exposed to business from an early age. Her father was involved in trading, while her mother worked in banking and also engaged in the sale of various products.
Lamptey later ventured into different businesses, including Mary Kay cosmetics, lingerie, groceries, kitchenware, household essentials and locally branded palm and coconut oil.
According to her, these experiences helped her gain a better understanding of what customers need and the importance of adapting to changing market conditions.
Her experiences eventually led to the establishment and growth of Hair Spice, a beauty business specialising in haircare products, wig-making tools, salon equipment and accessories.
Hair Spice currently operates branches in Accra and Kumasi while providing nationwide delivery services.
The business caters to hairstylists, wig makers, salon owners, beauty professionals and individuals seeking haircare products and related accessories.
Lamptey personally sources and ships products for the business, placing emphasis on authenticity and quality as part of Hair Spice’s value proposition.
She identified exchange-rate fluctuations, shipping delays and counterfeit products as some of the major challenges confronting Ghana’s beauty and haircare market.
She noted that the availability of cheaper counterfeit products can make it difficult for customers to immediately distinguish between authentic products and inferior alternatives.
To address the challenge, Hair Spice focuses on educating customers about how to identify genuine products and understand the potential risks associated with using inferior or counterfeit alternatives.
Lamptey believes building customer trust is essential for businesses operating in competitive markets, particularly where consumers have multiple options.
She has therefore urged entrepreneurs to remain committed to quality while developing systems that can support sustainable business growth.
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start small but think big, prioritise quality and customer trust, and establish strong business systems from the beginning.
